THE NELSON WAY

Friday 24 August – Sunday 2nd September (9 nights)

For those of you who have been on Tom Linley’s Nelson walks, you will have gathered that he is a great admirer of Admiral Nelson and, for a soldier quite knowledgeable!  After the success of Hadrian’s Wall, we wanted to do another “Way” and the Nelson Way combined Tom’s interest in Nelson and both our loves for the North Norfolk Coast Path.  I have booked hotel accommodation in Sheringham which is half way between Burnham Thorpe (Nelson’s birthplace) and Great Yarmouth (84 miles); the walk is via the North Norfolk coast to just south of Cromer, then inland to North Walsham and on to Great Yarmouth via the Norfolk Broads.   Hopefully the following year we will be able to continue from Great Yarmouth round the Suffolk coast, and also follow Nelson’s route from Essex to Portsmouth as a monthly coach trip (the whole route is 424 miles but we will be missing a few bits out!)

If you haven’t been to Norfolk, you are in for a treat, if you have been you will know what to expect and be keen to pay another visit!

Once we know who is interested in this holiday we will then sort out transport, either using the local buses where possible or we may have to hire a local coach and use cars.  I will also check out if we can use the train again, though I think that may be difficult as we will need cars to move around when we leave the coast.  Please send in your booking forms with a £20 deposit cheque.  The price of £50 per person, per night is for bed, breakfast and evening meal.  The hotel overlooks the beach and is also close to the town for us to get packed lunches each day.  Transport will be over and above this daily price.

We would like have both short and long walkers for the Nelson Way, but we will need a volunteer to lead the short walkers.  The long walks will be about 10 – 12 miles and the short walks about 6 – 8 miles.   When we know who is interested in joining us we hope to be able to sort that out.
