Peru and the Inca Trail Talk
There will be an interesting illustrated talk by Pauline Phillips at 7:30 pm on Friday 28th October at the Mencap Centre, Enbourne Gate, Enborne Road, Newbury, RG14 6AT. The entry free is £1.50 including tea/coffee.
We had a publicity display/book sales stand at the Waterways Festival on 24th July. This year the weather was kind to us unlike last year when it poured with rain. We did a good trade in books as we had some East Berkshire Ramblers books for sale as well as our own. Many thanks to all those who help out.
On the 1st July 2016 our Gate Installation team lead by Colin reached a milestone as they installed their 250th installation. The gate was installed at Rushall Farm, Bradfield in reasonable weather though the site was quite muddy. The gate has a special post engraved by Colin to commemorate the event. They were joined by most of our Ramblers Work Party and several guests for photos (see here) before adjourning to The Bull Inn at Stanford Dingley for a celebratory meal and a cake. We wish them well for them next 250 installations.
HF Holiday 2016
A group of 14 people went on this year's HF holiday to Derwentwater in June. Most of us had lovely recently decorated rooms, but unfortunately 5 people ended up in the "chalets" and I had nothing but complaints about the accommodation from them. The weather was lovely and so were the walks. I went on the easy walks two of which had to be changed due to the flood damage last winter. On the Saturday we walked around the low slopes of Skiddaw to Keswick and saw Osperys. On the Sunday we walked around Gowbarrow Fell with lovely views of Ullswater and walked up Aira Force before going to get the ferry when the havens opened up. We finished in a posh hotel in Glenridding. The Monday was the free day and some of us went on a cruise around Windermere. On Tuesday we walked around the lower slopes on Latrigg and then in to Keswick to catch the launch back to the house. The next day was a walk a long the river Derwent from Grange to Rosthwaite via Galleny Waterfalls. The final day was a walk around Buttermere. Everyone enjoyed the holiday and most are going in next years holiday to the Isle of Wight.
HF Holiday 2017
It is time to book for next years group HF holiday. A fun and enjoyable walking holiday on the Isle of Wight in June 2017 staying at Freshwater Bay. There are a limited number of single rooms but plenty of twin and double rooms, please let me know if you are willing to share and who with. The booking form from the centre of the programme needs to be sent by 27th of May if you wish to come.
Quiz with Fish and Chip Supper
About forty people attended the quiz night on the 4th March and enjoyed a quiz and fish and chip supper. The venue had to change from that advertised as Mencap had doubled booked. So it was held at the Slater Centre which became a bit cold towards the end of the evening. The winning team each received a touch, the second team a box of Roses and the last team a bag of Thornton's chocolates. The was also a raffle arranged by Carol to raise money for next years 25th anniversary celebrations. I will be arranging a quiz next March as part of the celebrations.
Our ever popular series of coach walks starts on 10th April. This year there will be seven coach walks including one to Salisbury Christmas market. They always fill up so you need to book early. The April one is virtually full. You will need to book early for the May one as no bookings will be processed between the 13th and 22nd May. If you book after 12th May check your emails and messages on Saturday evening that the coach is not full.
New Leaders Required
Your group needs YOU. Have you got a lovely walk you would like to share or ever through about leading a walk or giving something back. We need new leaders to keep up the number of walks, as we are gradually losing leaders and to share the work. We particularly need leaders for short walks (2 to 4 miles) on Sundays and weekdays and for medium walks (5 to 7.5 miles) on Saturdays. If you like to give it a go we can provide help from learning to read a map, someone to prewalk a walk and a leader to assist on the first one or two walks.
West Berkshire Ramblers 50th Anniversary
I am sure you are aware West Berkshire Ramblers celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2017 and the Committee thought the occasion deserved marking in some way.
The committe would like to know how you the members think we should celebrate it? For the 40th anniversary we had a one-day Walkfest on Snelsmore Common with a picnic afterwards. Other ideas could be getting a celebrity to join us for a walk or arranging an event in which the wider community could take part. There will be a special quiz night.
We really want your suggestions about how to mark our half century.
We will be setting up a working group in the next few weeks in order to start planninig for the festivities. So, if you would like to submit an idea, or to help the by joining the working group, please let a member of the Committe know or email the social secretary.
Quiz with Fish and Chip Supper
Come along to a fun quiz night on the 4th March 7:30pm at the Slater Centre in Hambridge Road (Note new location). There will be four rounds of questions. Get a team together of about six people, or come on your own or with a firend and make up a team on the night. You need to book in advance by 28th February using the booking form in the walks program or email the Webmaster for a booking program.
WBR Christmas Party
The West Berks Ramblers Christmas party is on Friday 11th December 2015, 7:15pm for 7:30pm at the usual place. There will be a choir at 7:30pm to entertain for about half an hour before the meal and there will be the usual entertainment after. For full details see the Autumn and Winter printed programme.
It is expected that our brand new website will go live around the time of the AGM. If you spot any problems with it or have any comments or suggestions on it please email them to the Webmaster.
We are now over half way through this year’s successful coach walks programme. The coach has been full or almost full so far with some being over subscribed. So if you want to go on the last one you will need to book early to guarantee a place. Winchcombe coach walk sold out.
We will have a stand at the Waterways Festival in Victoria Park on Sunday 26th July. If you want to find out about the Ramblers, interested in joining or are a member come along and have a chat. We will be selling copies of our “Walks in the Kennet Valley and Beyond” book.
A group of us went on a weeks holiday at HF’s country house near Beddgelert at the end of June and had a lovely time apart from being eaten alive by the midges on a couple of days. Most of us found the walking quite hard and challenging, but the view were worth it.
The 224th gate was installed recently on Boxford Common. It is one of five gates which will replace the stiles on the Common. The RWP will not necessarily be putting in all five but it is very pleasing to know that this will happen in the near future. The 100th gate is on the roadside near to Boxford common.
The first of our popular summer season of coach walks take place on the 12th April. The walks are in The Chilterns to Henley-on-Thames. There are 4 options: the 6 mile walk goes via Nettlebed and Bix Bottom, the 9 mile walk adds Cookley Green and the 11.5 mile walk includes Watlington or those that want an easy day can take the coach to Henley-on-Thames. Contact Chris Reynolds (01635 226826) for availability, only a few spaces left, and the booking forms are in the programme.
