West Berks Ramblers

Working for Walkers

About Us

Our inaugural meeting was held on 2nd March 1967 so we have been going for over 50 years. We were originally the Newbury and District Group but changed our name to 'West Berkshire' in 1985. Some of our history is detailed in the 50th Anniversary time line.

Nowadays we are one of nine groups based in Berkshire (see the Area website for information on the others). Our official territory for membership purposes is the west of the county up to approximately a line just east of Thatcham, though any Ramblers member can ask to be assigned to us wherever they live.

We started off in 1967 organising two walks per month but the programme has steadily evolved and we now average between four and five walks per week over the year as a whole. Many of the walks are within our home territory but we often venture further afield, including by coach in the summer months. We also arrange group holidays and social events.

We have held occasional ad hoc work parties almost from when we were formed. In the 1990's we started working with West Berks Mencap to help its adult clients get some outdoor activity and in 2003 our regular fortnightly Friday path inspection / maintenance work parties evolved from this. We also have a group that turns out 20 or so times a year to install gates on paths in the area - this has been running since 2004.

As a Ramblers group we are of course also involved in actively campaigning on footpath and countryside matters and regularly respond to things like diversion proposals and planning applications that have the potential to impact the walking environment.

Other activities over the years have included the publication of a number books of local walks and helping with the development of walking routes such as the Lambourn Valley Way.
